Adjusting the Underpainting Pallet

In this video I’m developing part of the underpainting for “In the Water”, a 24″ x 48″ oil painting on Arches Oil Paper.

Here, I’ve expanded the traditional grisaille pallet of umbers to include Paynes grey in the stems and leaves. Paynes grey contains some ultramarine and in contrast to the warmth in other areas of the underpainting, paynes grey tints out to appear even more blue. I’ll later glaze over the area with a very yellow green.

The lights and darks of the bluish underpainting will combine with the yellow/green glaze to create a luminous green. I recorded more of the process for this painting, which you can find here.

You can also view the final painting here.
